Chapter IV: tires

Article R314-1

The tires of any motor vehicle or trailer, with the exception of agricultural vehicles and equipment, must be equipped with pneumatic tires.
These tires, with the exception of those used on public works vehicles, must have tread over the whole of their road contact surface.
No fabric may be showing, neither on the surface or in the bottom of the tread.
Furthermore, they may not have any deep cuts in their walls.
Where agricultural vehicles and equipment are fitted with tires, these may have no deep cuts in their walls and no apparent fabric, neither on the surface nor in the base of the tread.
The type, shape, condition and terms of use for tires and other devices covered by this article are determined by decree of the minister for transport.
The minister of transport may allow derogations to obligations under this article for public works equipment.
Contravention of the provisions of this article, relating to the nature, shape, condition and terms of use is punishable by a fine for class IV contraventions.
The immobilisation of the vehicle may be prescribed, as provided for by articles L. 325-1 to L. 325-3.

Article R314-2

Offering for sale or selling, except for scrap, a tire not having the characteristics required by article R. 314-1 or deteriorated by excessive regrooving is punishable by a class IV fine.

Article R314-3

It is forbidden to insert into the road contact surfaces of tires any metal item which is likely to project from the surface. The minister for transport has fixed by decree the conditions under which there may be a derogation from this prohibition or the use of any anti-skid device.
The use of chains is only authorised on roads where there is snow.
The provisions of this article do not apply to mopeds or light motorised quadricycles.
The minister for transport, after consultation with the minister for agriculture, has fixed by decree the characteristics with which gripping chains used on automotive agricultural machinery and vehicle tires must comply.
Contravention of the provisions of this article or those used in its application is punishable by a class IV fine.
Immobilisation of the vehicle may be prescribed under articles L. 325-1 to L. 325-3.

Article R314-4

The minister for transport, on the opinion of the minister for agriculture, has fixed by decree the characteristics with which metal tires on agricultural vehicles and equipment must comply.
Contravention by any driver of the provisions in application of this article is punishable by a class III fine.
Immobilisation of the vehicle may be prescribed under the conditions of articles L. 325-1 to L. 325-3.

Article R314-5

The metal tires on animal-drawn vehicles must not be fitted with devices projecting from the surface in contact with the ground.
Contravention of the provisions of this article is punishable by a class III fine.

Article R314-6

The provisions of this chapter are only applicable to special military vehicles and equipment where they are compatible with the technical characteristics of their manufacture and use.

Article R314-7

The minister of transport has fixed by decree the rules for tires on special vehicles whose speed is not designed to exceed 25 k.p.h. Contravention by any driver of a special vehicle, equipped with tires, of provisions in application of this article is punishable by a class IV fine. Contravention by any driver of a vehicle equipped with metal tires, of provisions in application of this article is punishable by a class III fine.
